Cultural anthropology is the general study of human societies and cultures from a cross-cultural perspective. Students explore a wide range of material related to human societal and cultural development through the unique lens of conducting ethnographic field research. This field of study helps students understand and construct themselves and the world anew based on the perspective of cultural relativism and ability to communicate with strange or heterogeneous beings.
In an era when understanding the diversity and role of cultures is critical, cultural anthropology is receiving attention not only as a necessary tool for interacting with other cultures, but also as an important field in numerous professional endeavors, including cultural industry, education, tourism, marketing, ecology, international management, and counseling. The curriculum offered by the Department of Cultural Anthropology at Duksung Women's University includes applied anthropological elements with the strengths of traditional cultural anthropology to help students develop planning and organizational skills as well.
Education Objective

Through its focus on an in-depth understanding of human societies and cultures, the department intends to produce global citizens who raise meaningful questions and seek answers. The skills students will develop include:

  • An in-depth understanding and open attitude to the diversity of human societies and cultures;
  • The ability to recognize contextual problems and present creative alternatives;
  • Skills in comprehensive analysis and expression (writing, speaking);
  • The ability to communicate, mediate conflicts, and collaborate.
Specialities

Students majoring in cultural anthropology will acquire the qualities required in various professional fields such as research, broadcasting media, cultural planning, social activities, and marketing. Graduates of the department are currently engaged in the following occupations:

  • Anthropologist (ethnographer and ‘thick data’ expert)
  • Cultural planner (cultural content expert, broadcast entertainment planner, and travel planner)
  • Marketing and public relations expert (marketing research, social media and digital marketing expert)
  • Broadcasting/media expert (reporter, PD, publisher, game developer, and me-media content creator)
  • Domestic/international social innovation organization activist (social innovator)
Education Curriculum

The focus is on academic training and practical experiences that build a critical perception of problems in modern society and adaptation to change by combining the basic theories of cultural anthropology with new applied anthropological elements.
