The Department of Korean Language and Literature was established on May 17, 1950 as the Department of Korean Literature, one of the first three departments of Duksung Women’s University, also comprised of the Department of English Literature and the Department of Home Economics. Over the past 70 years, the department has retained the academic tradition and the true value of Korean Language and Literature studies. The Department of Korean Language and Literature aims for in-depth understanding and innovative research of Korean linguistics and literature. Also, students are expected to enhance their critical thinking skills in general by finding connections in various issues in Korean language and literature.

Specialities

The department boasts five professors teaching the courses of Korean Linguistics and Korean Literature. Courses on Korean Linguistics, including History of Korean Language, Korean Grammar, Korean Phonology and Korean Phonetics, are taught by professors Jeong-ho Yang and Ji-eun Kim. Within Korean Literature, professors Eun-ae Lee and Myeong-chan Lee are responsible for Modern Korean Literature, including novels, poems, and criticism. Professor Yu-jin Kim teaches Classical Korean Literature, including literature history, oral literature, classical poems, and classical novels.
