'Art History' is a field of cultural history that reconstructs and understands history through works of art. In the West, art history has been recognized as a major discipline since the 19th century, and most universities in Europe and America have art history departments. In addition, many art historians are active in universities, research institutes, museums, and art galleries. In Korea, the study of art history began to be known from the Japanese colonial era, and after the liberation, the participation of scholars increased, and the Korean Society of Art History was established in 1960. Gradually, art history majors were opened at various universities, and since the first art history department was opened at Hongik University's graduate school in the 1970s, art history majors were created at various universities and graduate schools in Korea.
